Last week Revision3 announced that they were cutting costs by canceling some of their programming and laying off some of their staff. As a fan of numerous Revision3 shows, this only served to solidify my realization of the current economic conditions.
The Truth Hitting Home
This sad realization first hit me after reading a post about Seesmic’s layoffs. While Seesmic is well funded and has money in the bank, CEO Loic Le Meur acted on good advice. Advice that a lot of web companies and start-ups seem to be getting.
They are telling him that the downturn will be deep and will be multi quarter. They told him it was a good idea to conserve cash and bunker down.
While it is on the news daily and on the minds of countless people, there is nothing like seeing a familiar face or company as a victim of this economic downturn to let the severity sink in. I didn’t think I would see the tech industry affected for some time to come, but that conclusion turned out to be far from reality.
Hope
When I look for hope in this nation’s future, a particular saying comes to mind:
One voice can change the world.
For me, this quote is closely tied to the current election. But more than that, it inspires and motivates me to push myself harder every time I hear it. The hope this nation needs isn’t going to come from tax breaks, nor from economic bailout plans. We need a president who can lead, but ultimately the hope this nation needs is in its people. As a whole we can get ourselves out of this economic slump, and I believe Barack Obama is the man who is going to lead us in doing so.
